DS Smith has unveiled a program to upgrade its kraft paper mill in Viana, Portugal, with a package of investments worth EUR 145 million. The multi-year initiative will involve the installation of cutting-edge papermaking equipment, the renovation of the mill's paper machine, and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The package of investments will include the construction of a new state-of-the-art recovery boiler, which will be one of the most advanced in Europe, and will enhance the mill's steam efficiency by 25% while recycling the steam back into the mill. The boiler will also support the reconstruction of the paper machine, PM4, to boost its speed and capacity. The investment in Viana Paper Mill is a part of DS Smith's target to cut Scope 1, 2, and 3 Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 46% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels, and to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050.
