UPM has received final operating authorization from the environmental authorities for its new UPM Paso de los Toros pulp mill, marking a significant milestone in the company's journey towards responsible and sustainable production.

The authorization process was comprehensive and thorough, with Uruguayan environmental authorities monitoring the construction of the mill throughout the project. The operating authorization process included several inspections by authorities and third-party audits by industry experts. UPM has also implemented an extensive environmental monitoring program that covers water and biota, air, soil, noise, and socio-economic aspects.

With the authorization in hand, the mill will commence operations immediately, with the first customer deliveries expected to ship in May. This growth investment will create approximately 4,000 new jobs through the value chain, along with around 6,000 induced jobs and a 2% increase in GDP for the Uruguay economy.

UPM's commitment to responsible and sustainable production is evident in its investment in state-of-the-art technology and processes designed to minimize environmental impact. The opening of the Paso de los Toros mill represents a significant step towards achieving UPM's goals of reducing its environmental impact while contributing to the economic and social development of Uruguay.
